Do they earn a slot? Yes, when they match your route. Escape/padlock keys — highlighted yellow like all key items — open the key-gated locks in the escape chains: hatch chains and gate padlocks. Functionally they're largely interchangeable with bolt cutters; the lock doesn't care which argument you make.
Key or cutters?
- Keys are single-purpose and certain — no durability debate, one lock, done.
- Cutters flex across lock types (exits, lockboxes, lockers) but carry the contested durability question.
- Holding both? Give one away. Two exit-openers on one body is one death away from zero exit-openers — the minimap shows who holds key items, and so does Michael's target list.
Notes
- Yellow highlight makes them easy to spot and easy to ping (hold L1/LB) for teammates.
- Not to be confused with sedan keys — same glow, different lock.
- On death you drop them, map-highlighted — call the drop location; the exit-critical highlight is reported to be inconsistent for teammates. Reported
