Escape routes & required items: the full chains
Updated Sep 11, 2026v1.0.1Verified2 min read
Four escape types exist, each an item checklist wearing a door costume. This page is the corrected, requirement-chain version — including the rules nobody reads on the tin: exits have a hard capacity, and Michael can re-close a freshly opened exit.
Ground hatch / storm cellar
The easiest type to spot: a hatch in the ground. The chain: bolt cutters or an escape/padlock key for the chain; if wooden boards cover it, add a heavy or long weapon (fire axe, pickaxe) to break them; sometimes debris or leaves must be cleared first. Requirements vary — spawn next to a clean one and it's the fastest escape in the game. 2–3 hatches per match, rotating spawn spots that community lists track roughly reliably. Reported
Sedan
The car with the hood open. Chain: repair kit + sedan keys + gas can — then someone must actually drive it out of town (drivers escape too, and you can load residents in). Annie skips the keys; nothing skips the repair kit. Michael can break the car again; the repair kit fixes it again. Full driving guide: driving the sedan.
Exit gate
A gated metal fence on the map edge. Chain: an electric fuse to power it (slow install) plus bolt cutters or a key for the padlock. The fuse is reported as the rarest routine item — and often comes from talking to residents rather than looting. Reported
Police wagon (and the police car)
Enough police calls summon the wagon (~7 minutes observed); survive until it arrives and board through the back — not the front. Described as the easiest escape once it exists. Separately, car keys dropped by a dead officer can open a police-car escape. Reported The meter mechanics live at the police meter & flare-gun trick.
The rules on top
- Exits cap out. After roughly four escapees, an exit switches off. Plan on opening more than one — details in exit capacity explained.
- Michael can re-close a fresh exit quickly. Open it when you're ready to use it, not as an announcement. Reported
- Interrupted objectives keep their progress — if fear or Michael breaks your install, the work waits for you. Reported
- Ordering residents to "Escape" auto-routes them to the nearest open exit; greyed out means closed, unreachable, or full.
