Does it earn a slot? Barely — but it beats its drawer-mates. The butcher knife's one distinction: it's the only short knife that's throwable. In a melee tier where "short and non-throwable" is the disease, the butcher knife is the specimen with half an immune system.
What the throw buys
Range options are grab-interrupt options: a thrown butcher knife joins the brick and lawn dart in the "break the grab from across the room" toolkit. In hand it's still a bottom-tier blade Michael powers through — throw it or trade it.
The hierarchy, kitchen edition
Kitchen knife < butcher knife < any real throwable < the best tier. If your slot is open and the counter has both knives on it, take the butcher — then keep looking.
